Formula 1 celebrates its 1000th world championship race at this weekend’s Chinese Grand Prix, with a title fight at the front between the Mercedes and Ferrari duos hotting up.

The Scuderia’s new boy Charles Leclerc will be hoping to bounce back from the heartbreak of Bahrain, when engine issues derailed what looked like a nailed on debut victory.

Instead, it was reigning champion Lewis Hamilton and his Silver Arrows team-mate Valtteri Bottas who took another Merc one-two ahead of the Monagasque.

Bottas may not have had the legs on Hamilton at the Sakhir circuit two weeks ago, but his strong start to the season means he heads into Shanghai leading the championship.

Who will be on top in China?

Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel is another who needs a good bounceback in China – his spin during the wheel-to-wheel duel with Hamilton was not his finest moment, and will need to claw back valuable points.

Red Bull’s Max Verstappen wasn’t in podium contention in Bahrain, and, alongside team-mate Pierre Gasly will be hoping their Honda-powered cars can perform well around the Shangahi circuit.

Other themes to look out for include the performance of the Renault cars, after both Nico Hulkenberg and Daniel Ricciardo suffered power failures in the Middle East, hotshot McLaren rookie Lando Norris building on his debut points finish and whether Williams can mount a comeback from a tricky season beginning.
